“CURB ALERT!”

Hi Neighbors,

We need to talk about all the “CURB ALERT” posts that are frequently seen on Facebook.

We understand that when you get that urge to purge, the easiest way to go about it is to set it outside and let people know it’s there, with the hope that it’ll go away on its own. Listing things for sale can be a big task, and the process often comes with a giant headache.  Set it and forget it, right? WRONG.

When items are put on the curb, and not placed in proper disposal bins, from the City’s standpoint, this is junk. It is a violation of our city code and comes with a fine (anywhere between $75-$750). The City of Minonk reserves the right to remove your items, and any removal costs can be applied to your next utility bill.

The garbage crew doesn’t come to Minonk to pick up all the ‘free stuff’ scattered in front of your house. If it is in the proper garbage can/bin, great. They’ll pick it up. If you’ve got a lot out there, especially some furniture, they might pick up one of those pieces. Reminder: you can set out one (1) bulk household item per week. Your bulk item must be maneuverable by a single person. If you can’t get your item to the curb alone, the garbage man can’t get it into their truck. (Note: electronics and construction materials must never be placed at the curb.)

If you’re wanting to offload some excess, have a dumpster delivered. Then you can really do some purging. Please, don’t just put things out on the curb, for “free”. Our code enforcement officer has been given the go-ahead to begin issuing citations for instances like these.

If you have questions, please reach out to the City. Thank you, Neighbors. We appreciate your cooperation.
